In the early 1950s idiosyncratic piano genius Bud Powell was still at the height of his powers, as this excellent sampler of Powell's '50s work proves. Wielding one of the most fluid and inventive styles ever to grace the 88's, Powell was one of bop's great visionaries, equal in stature to Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. This set, compiled by the ever reliable Classics France label, finds Powell playing with his technique and imagination in full flower. That the supporting personnel include period luminaries Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and Art Taylor, among others, is icing on the cake. |
