Lou Stein - Piano
Bob Carter - Bass
James Buffington - French Horn
John Barrows - French Horn
Peanuts Hucko - Saxophone

Pianist Lou Stein's numerous jazz credentials included full-time stints with Charlie Ventura and Glenn Miller & the Army Air Force Band, not to mention sporadic featured spots with Coleman Hawkins, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, and Joe Venuti. This Collectables two-fer provides a reminder of Stein's dazzling, yet entertaining jazz chops that were similar to Art Tatum. House Hop is a pleasant set of standards featuring Milt Hinton on bass and Jimmy Crawford on drums. The stronger set is The Lou Stein Three, Four and Five. Not only does it feature Stein's well-known composition "East of the Suez," but it adds additional spice by employing the horns of Peanuts Hucko, Johnny Barrows, and James Buffington. This recommended reissue is an affordable way to acquire these long-out-of-print albums

Lou Stein

Active Decades: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s
Born: Apr 22, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Bop, Swing

Although a swing-oriented pianist, Lou Stein has always been able to fit comfortably in Dixieland, bop, and commercial settings. His first major association was with Ray McKinley's band in 1942. While in the service, Stein played domestically with Glenn Miller's Army Air Force Band, although he did not go overseas. He gained recognition for his work with Charlie Ventura (1946-1947) and for his most famous composition "East of Suez." After that period ended, Stein became a studio musician but found time to perform and record with the Lawson-Haggart Band, Benny Goodman, Sarah Vaughan, the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, Louie Bellson, Red Allen, Coleman Hawkins, and Lester Young, in addition to recording a few albums as a leader. In later years he played with Joe Venuti (1969-1972), Flip Phillips, and recorded his own 1994 album for Pullen.
