Here is a jewel in the glittering discographies of the pianist-composer Bill Evans (1929-1980) and guitarist-composer Jim Hall (b. 1930). Perhaps one should call Intermodulation a softly glowing gem, for its radiance does not blind, but reflects instead the subtle brilliance of two master craftsmen who also happen to be great artists.

Recorded the spring of 1966, this was the second collection of Evans-Hall duets. The first, Undercurrent, was made almost exactly seven years earlier (although it was not issued by United Artists until 1962) and won unanimous critical plaudits. For all its oneiric pleasures. Undercurrent's companion piece may be even better. Certainly Intermodulation's repertoire and pacing, plus the contributions of Hall are superior.
--- James Isaacs (excerpted from the liner notes)

The second of two recorded duets by pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall has been reissued as a 31-minute CD; its brevity may be considered a shortcoming by some. Actually, the quality generally makes up for the lack of quantity, for Evans and Hall often thought alike musically and these six lyrical performances (only "The Jazz Samba" is taken at a medium tempo) are generally quite haunting. Most memorable is "My Man's Gone Now" and "Turn Out the Stars."
