Like Stan Getz, Shorty Rogers was a horn player deeply influenced by the cool jazz innovations of Miles Davis in the 1950s. Also like Getz, Rogers was intrigued by bossa nova, the Brazilian song form that was gaining popularity at the time. Getz paired with two of bossa nova's greatest innovators (Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim) and made the bigger splash, but Rogers's BOSSA NOVA album should not be overlooked. Scored for a big band, BOSSA NOVA swings with a sultry cool, and features a few of Rogers's own excellent compositions.
JAZZ WALTZ features compositions all written in 3/4 (waltz) time, making for a unique outing that boasts a surprising amount of swing. Some of the tunes-- "Witchcraft," and "A Taste of Honey," for example--are given a new lease via the odd time signature and punchy reworkings. Both BOSSA NOVA and JAZZ WALTZ are included on this twofer, which was released by Collectables in 2002, putting the albums back in print for the first time in decades.
Two albums originally released on the Reprise label in 1962 are included on this two-fer. "Bossa Nova" is a jazz exploration of the Brazilian-born Bossa Nova samba, a capitivating and syncopated rhythmic structure. "Jazz Waltz" presents Rogers as arranger, soloist and composer in an unusual and challenging setting - the exploration of the relationship between jazz and three-quarter time, in both big band and small band settings.
Not long before he took an extended breather from the jazz life, Shorty Rogers cut these two albums for Frank Sinatra's then-new Reprise label. Out of print for decades, both Bossa Nova and Jazz Waltz feature Rogers' smart big band arrangements, supple horn playing, and the finest cool jazz musicians on the West Coast. Bossa Nova retrofits the then-cutting-edge Brazilian music for the big band idiom and is on the same level as the Big Band Bossa Nova albums that both Stan Getz and Quincy Jones cut during the same era. It's a fun album that benefits from great sax work by Bud Shank, who had almost as much to do with the popularity and creation of the bossa nova as Stan Getz did. Rogers was almost as good a composer as he was a musician and arranger, so instead of going over the same few Antonio Carlos Jobim standards, the majority of the tracks for the session are originals that you won't hear anywhere else. While Jazz Waltz may sound square, it's actually a hipper-than-usual big band album. A waltz means that a song is in 3/4 time, making for a rather off-kilter and exciting jazz session that has a similar sound to the crime soundtracks cut by Duke Ellington and Lalo Schifrin. Neither of these albums are as original nor as exciting as Rogers' groundbreaking recordings from the early '50s, but they're still very good and it's wonderful to have them back in print after such a long time.
