The Israeli-American jazz connection has grown in the last ten years, with an influx of dynamic and virtuosic new talent. Omer Klein's compositions and improvisations combine his deep love for the jazz tradition, his passion to explore and master the piano, and his strong connection with the sounds of his homeland.P"A mouthwatering glimpse of burgeoning talent." --- Down Beat

The Israeli pianist Omer Klein makes an impressive debut on the American jazz scene with this CD. Well accompanied by bassist Omer Avital, drummer Ziv Ravitz, and percussionist Itamar Doari, Klein's ten originals blend Middle Eastern-flavored themes and rhythms with thoughtful jazz improvisations. "Abutbul" is an infectious opener, gradually building steam and ending with a Avital's wailing arco bass solo as the piece fades. The haunting melody "Tiul Be 'Israel" sounds like a religious chant that has been transformed into an intricate jazz vehicle. Avital adds an oud solo in the brisk but charming "Netanya", though he oddly does not play the ancient instrument in "Oud Song." To add a little variety, Klein adds a wordless vocal chant to the mellow "Matchut." Middle Eastern influences have been used on occasion by American jazz musicians, but it is even more interesting to hear how a native of the region adapts the music of his land to entice jazz listeners into exploring less familiar territory. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
