Susie Arioli stands in front of her band with brushes and a snare drum, takes standards we all know and love and gives them loving, witty and respectful interpretations. There are wonderful re-worked standards here, including I'il Never Smile Again, a hit for Sinatra by the late Ruth Lowe and Ellington's Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me.

Jordan Officer, a guitarist who seems to have inhaled the essence of Les Paul, Charlie Christian and even T-Bone Walker at birth, shines time and time again on this CD, and the two instrumentals here - Jordan's Boogie and Walter's Flat feature smart, tasty solos and solid but understated grooves. And note must be made, too, of the considerable contributions made by the two other members of the group, Solon McDade on bass and Michael Jerome Browne on acoustic guitar.

There are also two very special guests on this album. The late Ralph Sutton - to whom this album is dedicated - was a fine pianist who built on the tradition of James P. Johnson and Willie "The Lion" Smith, and became the Glenn Gould of stride piano, adding a degree of sophistication and surprise to everything he played. "Jordan and I had heard him in Toronto at the Montreal Bistro," Arioli recalls. "His touch was so dynamic and elegant exactly what we try to aspire to; we just had to ask if he would record with us."

This was Sutton's last recording session before he died, at 79, late last year.

The other guest here is Jeff Healey. On Having Fun, he delivers a feathery acoustic guitar solo that Eddie Lang would have been proud of. Healey appears with his regular bass player, Colin Bray, who can also be heard on Honeysuckle Rose.

There is much here to enjoy, and on different levels. Smart playing, a mix of songs we know and ones we'll get to love just as much, and - best of all the assured, jaunty, direct and simple voice of Susie Arioli. These days, it doesn't get much better than this.
