Of course, every work that Charlie Mariano has recorded since the 50s is unique. But "The Music of Charlie Mariano" is still something very special; for the first time, this CD deals (almost) only with Mariano's compositions. Mariano has innumerable fans worldwide as an interpreter of the music of others, and sometimes the composition skills of the master then get pushed to the back. Mariano, who really cannot be accused of harboring a personality cult, took a long time before he acceded to the request of his fellow musician and close friend of many years Mike Herting to make this recording. But once he started, he became very enthusiastic himself and pushed on the recordings with a high degree of motivation.
As Mariano and Herting also commute between two worlds in "real life", and India has almost become their second home, the music on this CD was also recorded both in Bangalore, India and Germany. Known pieces ("Crystal Bells", "Sleep My Love"), less well-known pieces ("Zana", "Ballade") and some never recorded yet ("Down the Kavery") can be heard, but also three pieces that Mike Herting wrote specifically for this project to honor Charlie.
As a result, listeners are not only captivated from the first sound by the always felt and almost spiritual closeness of the two partners, but also by the usual and intimate makeup of the band. The communication between Mike and Charlie takes place with the sureness of a sleep-walker. It is never a question of "higher-faster-further", but instead of inner understanding between two people, who communicate via their instruments and say more than a thousand words in the process. |
