Contemporary jazz bassist Gerald Veasley makes no claim to be a master chess player, but there are certain unmistakable parallels between his line of work and the small-scale war game that has challenged great minds for centuries. "There’s a multiplicity of decision making in the game of chess, and there are consequences to every action", says Veasley. "In a lot of ways, making music is like that too. There are so many choices, especially in jazz, where the situation is never the same twice. That's always exciting to me. You’re creating new scenarios at every turn - every time you step in front of an audience, or every time you step into the studio."

That same combination of challenges and opportunities is at the heart of Your Move, Veasley's new Heads Up International release. The album is the latest - and perhaps most innovative and audacious - maneuver in the game that Veasley has been playing since his early days as an up-and-coming musician in his native Philadelphia.

Guitarist Chuck Loeb steps in as a formidable session player/producer and author or co-author of several tracks. Saxophonist and longtime Veasley band member Chris Farr also shares a few song credits. The easygoing "Slip 'n' Slide" includes some playful interplay between Veasley and Loeb, with a rock solid backbeat crafted by drummer Josh Dion. "So Close to the Sun" showcases guest trumpeter John Swana and includes atmospheric layers from organist Peter Kuzma and vocalist Mikki Kornegay. "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is a unique take on the Sly & The Family Stone classic from 1970.

On Your Move, bassist Gerald Veasley uses his musical vocabulary in a creative and personal manner to deliver inviting harmonic rhythms, extended phrases and flexibility. This follow up to Gerald Veasley At The Jazz Base!, a live set recorded at Veasley's club in Pennsylvania, is a richly textured recording that finds Veasley collaborating with the award-winning contemporary jazz guitarist Chuck Loeb on four songs including the title track. The sterling set opens with "Hear Now," a high-energy, funky, riff laden tune that spotlights Veasley's exemplary execution of the melody and his solos on four and six string basses. "Slip ‘n' Slide" features Loeb's great chops on a variety of instruments and is the kind of head-boppin' song that keeps your feet moving but by contrast, the cool beauty of "So Close To The Sun," showcases trumpeter John Swana in a melancholy mood and is yet another indication of the rich textures on this great CD. Continuing with the feel-good feeling of the opening track, "Your Move," grooves with an easy-going mellowness that is built on a solid ground beat. The passing of a long-time friend provided the inspiration for "Three Tears," a hopeful tribute which features mournful EWI phrases played by Chris Farr. This particular composition also features Farr on saxophone using slower harmonic rhythms to give the listener a sense of peace and serenity. Veasley continues to share his compositional integrity on "Roxanne's Dance," an emotional ballad that displays Veasley's superb flexibility on five string acoustic bass guitar and six string bass guitar. It's quite clear that Gerald Veasley and his masterful collaborators emphasized a higher level of excellence and the results reveal how well the different ensembles performed as unified interpreters of his musical vision.

Gerald Veasley

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jul 28, 1955 in Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Urban, Contemporary Jazz, Crossover Jazz, Smooth Jazz

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Gerald Veasley is an excellent bassist who has played his share of commercial music but definitely has the chops needed for more improvisatory settings. Veasley was exposed to gospel and R&B as a child and went on to play in various R&B bands in West Philly as a teenager in the late '60s and 1970s. Along the way, he discovered jazz and came to appreciate Weather Report and Return to Forever as much as he appreciated Earth, Wind & Fire and Smokey Robinson. Veasley has cited Jaco Pastorius, Anthony Jackson, and Stanley Clarke as his main influences on electric bass, and has named Oscar Pettiford and Paul Chambers as his favorites on the acoustic bass. Having held the music of Weather Report and Pastorius in such high regard, Veasley was delighted when, in 1988, Weather Report co-founder Joe Zawinul hired him as a sideman. Veasley, who stayed with Zawinul until 1995, signed with Heads Up International in the early '90s and recorded his first album for the label, Look Ahead, in 1992 before providing Signs in 1994 and Soul Control in 1997. Veasley continued with the label, issuing the mellow, smooth album Love Letters in 1999, then returned in 2001 with On the Fast Track, an energetic, funk-inflected return to the grooves of his early career.
