Jazz
A debut solo piano CD by Kaori Osawa a new, Japanese jazz pianist with an abundance of talent. Currently based in Tokyo, she studied with Aki Takase in Germany and later at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. There are nine compositions on the CD, eight of them are Kaori Osawa originals plus "Well You Needn't" by Thelonious Monk - an acknowledged and discernable influence on her playing. But Kaori Osawa has also been exploring new territory - combining jazz with elements from her Japanese musical background and from contemporary classical. There is a powerful conviction to her playing that takes hold of the listener from the very first note. As a musician, Osawa has two sides: she is a jazz pianist but also a master of the traditional art of 'nagauta' (Japanese singing accompanied by shamisen). These contrasting worlds are connected within her and subtly colour her music. |
