On May 6, 2008, 23 year old pianist, composer and bandleader Taylor Eigsti will release Let It Come To You, his sixth overall and second Concord Jazz release, marking yet another bold step forward for the Grammy-nominated musician. Let It Come To You is an impressive 11-song collection of imaginatively refreshed standards, creative interpretations of newer works from artists as diverse as Pat Metheny and the pop band Eels, as well as four original compositions.

"I wanted this record to be a combination of much of the fun music and arrangements of jazz standards that my group has been performing live, songs like "Caravan," "Fever," Deluge" and "I Love You," and my own compositions, which primarily reflect the concept of acceptance toward the things in life that were - and are - out of my control," says Eigsti.

Co-produced by Eigsti and Chris Dunn, Let It Come To You features a solid group of musicians including longtime collaborator Julian Lage on guitar, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums - as well as such special guests as Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone and Edmar Casteneda on Columbian harp.

Eigsti opens the CD with swinging exuberance on Cole Porter's "I Love You," one of several tunes on Let It Come to You that are studio first takes. It's followed by another spontaneous take of Pat Metheny's "Timeline," which is dedicated to the late Michael Brecker and on which Joshua Redman guests, taking two dynamic solos and trading at the end with Eigsti. Other reimagined covers include Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Portrait in Black and White," Wayne Shorter's "Deluge," and pop band Eels' "Not Ready Yet." In addition to the title track, Let It Come to You also features an ambitious, multilayered three-part "Fallback Plan Suite," which includes "Less Free Will," "Not Lost Yet," and "Brick Steps."

Eigsti's Concord Jazz debut, Lucky to Be Me, took the former child prodigy to an entirely new level of success. He was featured on the covers of both Jazziz and Keyboard magazine and was also profiled in his own BET-J television special. The CD spent 23 weeks on the national jazz radio airplay charts, peaking at No. 7, and was among the top 15 most-played jazz albums on radio for 2006. Lucky to Be Me earned two GRAMMY nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and for Best Instrumental Jazz Solo Performance.

The title of this brilliant and multi-faceted twenty-something pianist's 2006 Concord Records debut Lucky to Be Me was a self-fulfilling prophecy. The disc's success took the former child prodigy to a higher level of success, earning him the covers of Jazziz and Keyboard Magazine, and a profile in his own BETJ TV special. A major airplay hit on jazz radio throughout the year, the disc also earned Taylor Eigsti two Grammy nominations. On his second release, he's being a little more ironic with his title, knowing that the accolades will continue but only because he is topping himself creatively and musically. Once again, he proves himself a master interpreter, ensemble player, and composer. Though three of his four originals -- collectively gathered as the "Fallback Plan Suite" -- are tucked at the end, they display an exciting melodic and slight pop sensibility that perfectly balances the insane flurries of chops on the rest of the collection. The suite's first track "Less Free Will" is a lyrical, slow building, funk-spiked jazz piece that finds him in perfect synch with tenor players Dayna Stephens and Ben Wendel, and flutist Evan Francis. His solo in the midst is elegant and restrained, with subtle horn enhancements. The second movement "Not Lost Yet" features a lovely, sparse arrangement, with only subtle horn and flute textures behind Eigsti's rhythmic musings. "Brick Steps" brings up the energy, with rumbling percussion, rolling piano lines, and darting, punchy horns. This trio of songs is enough to sell jazz fans on the magnificence of the album, but there's equal joy in exploring his twists and turns through a series of pieces from different jazz and pop eras -- starting with his thoughtful, low-key then frenetic exuberance on Cole Porter's "I Love You" and running through a high-spirited, strutting and swinging romp on Wayne Shorter's "Deluge." Eigsti puts a clever Afro-Cuban tinge on Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington's "Caravan," and he and guitarist Julian Lage share a hypnotic and sensitive, classically tinged duet on Jobim's "Portrait in Black and White." The pianist saves his richest inventions, however, for a bravura blast through Pat Metheny's "Timeline," a dedication to Michael Brecker featuring several minutes of sizzling improvisation and hardcore jamming by Joshua Redman. Another unique, hip choice is his graceful touch on "Not Ready Yet" by the pop band the Eels. There comes a time in every former prodigy's life when he/she has to be judged by their output as an adult. Eigsti's just keeps getting more compelling and inspiring.

Taylor Eigsti

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: Sep 24, 1984
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Modern Creative, Post-Bop, Mainstream Jazz

Pianist/composer Taylor Eigsti is a precocious and prodigious jazz talent based in Menlo Park, CA. His style is enthusiastic, straightforward, and swinging, with elements of stride, bop, soul, and funk. He began piano lessons at the age of four, opened for David Benoit when he was eight, performed with Dave Brubeck at 13, and recorded his first CD at 14, with Dan Brubeck on drums. Eigsti's musical parents were supportive of his career, but also made sure he had a normal childhood, including pursuing his love of basketball despite the risk to his hands. Attracted early on to the spontaneity of jazz, Eigsti's first taste of Art Tatum inspired him to explore the worlds of Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris, Monty Alexander, Phineas Newborn, and Benny Green, among others, while ongoing classical studies helped forge his formidable technique.
After studying at the Stanford Jazz Workshop for several years, he joined their teaching staff at age 15. A year later, Red Holloway, who'd heard Eigsti perform in San Jose, invited him to be his band's special guest on the prestigious SS Norway jazz cruise; two years later, he headlined on the cruise with his own trio. Eigsti has opened for Diana Krall, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole, and Hank Jones; in 2001, he performed at three "Rising Star" concerts at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Graduating as salutatorian of his high-school class, Eigsti went on to jazz studies at USC. In September of 2002 Eigsti's well-oiled trio, including bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis, made their first appearance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. A recorded debut of sorts, Taylor's Dream, appeared on the Japanese label DIW in 2001. Eigsti's June 2003 national CD debut, Resonance, on Bop City, demonstrated both his achievements and sky's-the-limit potential as a first-rate player and composer. Moving to the Concord label, Eigsti released Lucky to Be Me in 2006 and Let it Come To You in 2008.
