Buster Williams, now in his 60th year, is one of the great bass players of all time, gracing the bandstands and recording sessions of countless jazz instrumentalists and singers, including Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter to name just a few.
For this album, and aside from his own compositions, the veteran bassist has taken be-bop standards that that have chord structures that fit neatly into the melodic lines of popular songbook standards - hence the album's title, 'Joined at the Hip': "Honey Suckle Rose" became "Scrapple From The Apple", "What Is This Thing Called Love" turned into "Hot House" etc. An important part of this album, of course, is the principal architect of be-bop - Charlie Parker. Of the nine compositions here, five are his.
Taking the alto sax chair is the formidable Steve Wilson, formerly of Chick Corea's Origin group. Pianist Carlos McKinney and drummer Ali Muhammad Jackson Jr. were both born in Detoit into musical families, and although not that well-known here in the UK, they have a wealth of experience with top name musicians (Antonio Hart, Wallace Roney, Sonny Rollins, Elvin Jones, etc). The two also happen to be cousins. |
