After the release of Django Bates' album Summer Fruits (and unrest) (JMt 919 065-2) JMt is presenting another young up-and coming piano player and composer: Uri Caine recorded his debut album Sphere Music on JMT.
At the young age of seven Uri, who is born in Philadelphia, started playing piano. At this stage of his career as a musician he had no interest in playing jazz. This changed abruptly: Being thirteen years old, Uri had his first experiences with the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. And all of a sudden he fell in love with jazz. From then on he didn't want to stay home in the evenings to do his homework for school, instead he visited local jazz clubs. Uri remembers: "These were very exciting times. There used to live many great musicians in Philadelphia, so I had a lot of opportunities to play with them and to grow as a musician." At that time Uri played in bands led by Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Mickey Roker, Johnny Coles, Bobby Durham, Odean Pope, Jymie Merritz and Grover Washington.
After High School Uri Caine dedicated himself totally to jazz music. He started to expand his theoretical background at the University of Pennsylvania in his hometown Philadelphia. However, he got fed up of studying out of books, by sitting in a classroom pretty soon: "I thought school was so boring. All I wanted to do was to play!" He finally did play in bands of Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Benny Golson, Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Max Roach, Rashid Ali, Bobby Watson, Gary Thomas and Wallace Roney while they found their way through Philadelphia. During that time Uri gained valuable experiences for his further carreer. Experiences that later contibuted to his immense versatility.
"From then on I knew that I wanted to move to New York. I wanted to play many types of music from more "inside" swing to a freer type of improvisational music." It didn't take long for Uri to make himself a name in New York. The message was spread very fast among musicians, that there's a new virtuoso as well as talented piano player in town. Uri was engaged by Anthony Cox, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Ralph Peterson, Bob Moses, Kevin Bruce Harris, Tom Harrell, Buddy DeFranco/Terry Gibbs, Don Byron (just to mention a few). "I was afraid to move in just one direction, to become kind of stubborn. So I decided to work in as different projects as possible. Still up until today I have the desire to get involved with all forms of music's vast varieties between mainstream, contemporary music and avant garde jazz. Uri Caine's talents are documented on many albums, among his favourites are: "One Minute Of Love" which is the one and only release of the Rochester/Veasley Band and Don Byron's Mickey Katz project. He also made use of his capabilities as a composer (he gained many awards for composing during his time at univerity) e.g. he received grants to write music for the Uptown String Quartet and composed several pieces for chamber groups and Orchestra.
Besides his activities as a sideman Uri Caine is the coleader of a trio with the drummer Barry Altschul and the multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers. He also expanded in directions of progressive pop music aside of guitarist Arto Lindsey and his band Ambitious Lovers.
Uri Caine decided to call his debut Sphere Music, an ambiguous title: It shows Uri's deep respect for Thelonious Sphere Monk and symbolizes Uris own musical approach.
The album is opened by "Mr. B.C." featuring Don Byron on clarinet, Kenny Davis on bass and drummer Ralph Peterson. On all tunes it is Ralph Peterson, whose immense powerful play pushes the different ensembles. "This Is A Thing Called Love" is performed by Uris trio, for "When The Word Is Given" Uri is joined by saxophonist Gary Thomas, cornetist Graham Haynes and bassist Anthony Cox. Don Byron, probably the most outstanding clarinet player of his generation, is featured on three titles. Both Caine and Byron made many experiences in Don's Klezmer project, they know each other very well. This intimacy can be heard on their duet "'Round Midnight" (a Thelonious Monk composition, like "We See" which is performed by Uri's trio).
"If jazz has anything new to offer at all, then it comes from this musician" said the German daily FAZ about Gary Thomas. Gary recently released his fifth JMt-album "Exile's Gate" (JMt 919 066-2). On Sphere Music he again performs tricky melodies with an immense power. He also plays his breathtaking sax-games on "The Word Is Given" and the last title, "Jan Fan", encouraged by Graham Haynes, who recorded various JMt albums aside of Steve Coleman.
Uri Caine presents himself very straight in acoustic-only line ups. Pronouncing his handycraft as pianist, composer and arranger he doesn't make risky musical excursions. His postbop compositions are traditionally oriented and well arranged: they open up space for creative and powerful improvisations, space that is made use of Uri's outstanding sidemen. Sphere Music: Acoustic jazz of our times.
