Although Les McCann's INVITATION TO OPENNESS is atmosphericand dreamy, the powerful drumming of Bernard Purdie adds some driving rhythms, resulting in an intriguing album. McCannessentially set out here to entrance listeners with contagious grooves and colourful keyboard, guitar, and horn textures. When the record was made in the early 1970s, this style of music was not uncommon; the confluence of jazz and rock--especially the lingering psychedelic movement--encouraged these types of experimental releases. However, unlike some of the other albums from this era, this disc does not sound dated. In fact, it sounds vibrant, even decades removed. The three extended tunes on INVITATION TO OPENNESS are marked byfunky backbeats and cosmic sound effects, with each piece essentially a one-chord modal jam. However, McCann, who performs almost exclusively on an electric piano, floats bi-tonalchord clusters overtop Purdie's funky beats. Rich rhythmic tapestries also enwrap the music, and, even when the musicians move into abstract territory, the additional percussionists ably anchor the proceedings so that the listener doesn't get, well, too lost in space. |
