Culled from Les McMann's private collection of his own "live" performances throughout the '70s, Les Is More could be considered a greatest hits of sorts. The record opens with the Ahmad Jamal inspired "Malea", a breezy, yet funky, trio piece that defines the heart of McMann's sound and style. For Les fans this performance alone is worth the price of admission. Following that is a rare "live" collaboration with Roberta Flack, prior to her platinum success on Atlantic records. An aural documentary style montage entitled, "Les By Night", is perhaps the record's centerpiece, featuring guest appearances by Cannonball Adderley, Carmen McCrae, Stanley Turrentine and Joe Sample. Also included are two of McCann's biggest hits: the soul jazz classic "Compared To What", and the gorgeous '60s jazz ballad "With These Hands". |
