On the occasion of his 70th birthday
At the age of 70, Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand) is at the height of his creativity. He has composed a lot of new tunes (which we are eager to hear on record) and he still tours extensively. He is active creating a network of musical schools under the name of M7 (Music, Movement, Martial Arts, Medicine, Menu, Meditation, Masters), a groundbreaking holistic concept which is likely to spread all over the world within the next few years.
Abdullah's music is limitless. It contains everything. He may be known primarily as a jazz musician, but his music contains elements of styles as diverse as Christian hymns, Arabic and Malaysian traditional music, Cape Town carnival tunes, traditional jazz as well as bebop and free jazz, the rhythms of ancient Xhosa and Khoisan music, and classical piano playing.
If you attend an Abdullah Ibrahim concert today, you will for a moment think that you are witnessing the rebirth of the ancient African tradition of marabi; he will then take you through the most swinging jazz choruses, and the next moment you will feel that this is not jazz at all you are listening to but rather a performance of classical music. Abdullah may very well one day be known as the musician who brought the art of improvisation back into classical music. What makes Abdullah able to unite all these elements is his extraordinarily deep feeling of the common roots of all aspects of human nature. A deeply religious person, Abdullah never hesitates to praise and thank the Lord. He is himself, through his music, a messenger of cosmic harmony.
'Welcome home' is how Abdullah often greets his audience. With this CD, which sums up a great part of Abdullah's career, ENJA Records say 'Welcome home' to Abdullah himself. A most remarkable person is visiting our planet. This CD will give you an idea of who he is. ---Lars Rasmussen |
