Widely considered one of the most adventurous jazz vocalists to ever grace the mic, Betty Carter recorded only sporadically in the 1950s and '60s, but those albums helped establish her style, and '62's ROUND MIDNIGHT found her pushing further into the risk-taking territory that would define her later work.

Carter's husky tone and approach to melodic and rhythmic phrasing is distinctive, and her song choice is unique and varied as well, veering from standards ("Body and Soul") to Brazilian tunes ("One Note Samba") and even an original (her own "Who What Why Where When" is one of the album's highlights). Lush orchestral arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman add the crowning touch to this fine outing which, unlike many vocal jazz albums, favors freshness over familiarity.
