BRIEF NOTES
J Curve Records heralds the very significant release of Aaron Goldberg's Unfolding as the young pianist clearly establishes himself among the modern masters of jazz. As a member of the Joshua Redman Quartet, he has achieved great visibility on the international jazz scene. Here, with a solid and interesting program of trio performances in which technique, language and spirit inform a readily identifiable voice, Aaron has created a classic recording of the jazz piano trio.
The interaction and empathy of the musicians is superb. Returning from Aaron's outstanding first J Curve CD, Turning Point, are bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland who both contribute stunning solos and support.
Aaron's seven originals in the set distill modern jazz influences while allowing his musical personality to strongly shine through. His unique treatment of "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" addresses Stevie Wonder's memorable pop melody in the context of a thoughtfully reconceived harmonic and rhythmic setting. In so doing, he has made the tune, which many of us have heard hundreds of times, his own. Likewise, he has contemplated Coltrane's "Equinox" - a song which cannot be easily separated from the composer's original performance - and fashioned a personal statement while staying true to the spirit of the original concept.
