Guitarist Cal Collins and his quartet
BRIEF NOTES Cal Collins Cal Collins started with bluegrass picking veering into jazz through his family's enthusiasm for the Hot Club of France recordings of Django Reinhardt. With no formal training, he listened to the radio and kept on playing, influenced by the Nat Cole trio, guitarists Oscar Moore and John Collins, and pianist Art Tatum and Fats Waller. After gaining a regional reputation he was recommended by trumpeter Jack Sheldon, with whom he had often played, to audition for Benny Goodman. During his years with Goodman, Cal earned a national reputation as a mainstream jazz virtuoso guitarist.
Through many successful recordings Collins achieved an international reputation. He has a true enjoyment of music - jazz in particular - and continues a busy schedule of live performances and recordings. He intends to stay busy doing what he loves - playing his guitar.
J Curve Records is honored to have recorded the Cal Collins trio with Michael Moore and Jimmy Madison joined by Kenny Poole on "S'US FOUR". |
