Monica Akihary vocal
Niels Brouwer guitar

After her 2004 quartet album "Uwa I" (ENJ-9472 2) singer Monica Akihary presents her band Boi Akih ("Princess Akih") in a pure duet setting this time. "In 2004 we started to do concerts with the 'Uwa I' material as a duo", she says. "When Matthias Winckelmann heard a recording of one of these concerts he was immediately convinced that we should do a duo album. We more and more liked the idea and from 2005 we really focused on playing as a duo." Monica's partner in life and music is Dutch guitar virtuoso Niels Brouwer, an intriguing composer and fascinating improviser who wrote all the music for the new album.

Born in the Netherlands of Moluccan origin, Monica Akihary has studied sculpture at the School of Fine Art in Amsterdam and the Arts Academy in Yogyakarta (Indonesia). She prefers singing in her father's mother tongue, the language of Haruku Island. It is a language of soft vowels and melodic syllables that perfectly fit with her dark, warm voice and improvisational approach and give the singer "so much more freedom in musical expression". Niels and Monica have integrated this language into their very own musical style rooted in Indonesian (Gamelan, Javanese), South Indian and European classical music along with jazz. It is an exotic amalgam spiced with Indian rhythms and lively improvisation, "a curious mix of jazz", as Monica says, "a new kind of jazz if you like."

"Yalelol" (the non-physical being), Akihary's fifth album, makes good use of many influences ranging from Indonesian dang dang dut music and Hindi beats to blues, Arabic rhythms, west African songs and more. Monica Akihary's dazzling voice leads us into a new and still developing world of subtle feelings and glowing colors. She is an exceptional vocalist who sends her song directly into the listener's soul. In Business Day, Gwen Ansell wrote: "Vocalist, not singer, is the best term for Akihary: her voice swings sweetly - but also soars and swoops, scats and whispers." An unlikely combination of technical skills and thrilling melodies, Boi Akih, the duo, playfully connects the simple with the complex, thus creating a unity both deeply felt and daringly innovative. "We look for our own sound", the two of them say: "It's OUR voice, not only the sound of Monica's voice but also the voice of Niels' way of playing his guitar."
