Since there aren't any other bands like The Lounge Lizards, it isn't a stretch to say they are the best at what they do. Superior musicians all, The Lounge Lizards are a groovy, idiosyncratic ensemble that boils rock dynamics, samba/mambo rhythms, imaginary film soundtracks, Eastern European folk idioms, funk, and strains of freeform improv in a jazz melting pot. Frontman and composer John Lurie leads the line-up of two saxophones, trumpet, bass clarinet, cello, bass, drums, piano, and auxiliary percussion through shimmering explorations of texture and musical possibility.
NO PAIN FOR CAKES is one of the band's finest offerings. Passion oozes through every track here. "Tango #3, Determination For Rosa Parks" builds in intensity as it proceeds. The driving "The Magic of Palermo," the fragmented nightmare of "My Clown's On Fire," the lovely, drunken swagger of "Bob And Nico," and the remarkable, Gypsy-inflected title track are all equally compelling in style and atmospheric drama. A superior example of an all-too-rare creative and singular musical vision, NO PAIN FOR CAKES is beautiful, challenging music of the highest order.
