Trumpeter Duane Eubanks' set evolves as it goes along. It begins like a Blue Note revival date, with fine hard bop versions of Hank Mobley's "Two and One" and Bobby Hutcherson's memorable "Little B's Poem." After a driving Ralph Peterson original, Eubanks sounds lyrical on "In Your Own Sweet Way" and his ballad "Too Late." Robin Eubanks' "Red, Black and Green Blues" goes back to Art Blakey territory and brings back Lee Morgan's obscure "Stop/Start." The most original songs are the final two, a hip-hop-inspired piece called "Ebony Slick," which includes guest altoist Antonio Hart (and is full of fire), and the lengthy and often rather free "Slew Footed." Eubanks is joined by his older brother, Robin, on trombone (who, in this setting, shows off the influences of Curtis Fuller and J.J. Johnson), the cool-toned and Tranish tenor of J.D. Allen, and a tight and stimulating rhythm section. The musicianship is excellent, and even if none of the players (except perhaps Peterson) has overly original voices, they certainly fare well on this modern straightahead jazz set.
