Jazz
Recorded September 14 and 15, 1989 at Cody Sound
Herbie Harper - Tenor (Vocal), Trombone Bill Perkins - , Engineer, Flute, Flute (Baritone), Flute (Tenor), Producer, Sax (Baritone), Sax (Tenor) John Leitham - Bass Larance Marable - Drums Larry Koonse - Guitar
Herbie Harper and Bill Perkins have assembled a pianoless quintet similar to what Herbie Harper recorded with in the mid 50's. A fine collaboration with everyone in top form.
* James Rozzi - Liner Notes
Trombonist Herbie Harper is best-known for his recordings in the 1950s but this 1989 set shows that decades of studio work had not dulled his style. Teamed in a quintet with Bill Perkins (who switches between tenor, baritone and flute), guitarist Larry Koonse, bassist John Leitham and drummer Larance Marable, Harper mixes together standards and lesser-known tunes including Russ Freeman's "The Wind," Jobim's "Zingaro," "Remember" and Bob Brookmyer's "Dirty Man." This is a modern cool jazz set that swings at a quiet volume; straightahead jazz fans will enjoy the results. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
