Jazz
Recorded: Hollywood, CA, 1958
Richie Kamuca (tenor), Ben Tucker (bass), Victor Feldman (piano, vibes), Stan Levey (drums)
This excellent stereo recording was originally produced by Bill Holman and engineered by Bones Howe and Wally Heider. It is being made available on compact disc in pristine unprocessed stereo. One of the original members of Harry Babasin's jazzpickers, Dempsey Wright was an excellent string player doubling on guitar and violin. On this recording, he plays guitar exclusively, and will be a welcome discovery for appreciators of the guitar styles of Barney Kessel, Howard Robert and other Los Angeles based stylists of the late 1950's.
Producer: Bill Holman; Cover Design: Stan Levey; Uner Notes: John Tynan.
Dempsey Wright, who came out of nowhere to record a small label album in the 1970s, has been essentially forgotten for decades. However, on this Andex album (reissued on CD by V.S.O.P.), Wright holds his own with a strong supporting cast (Richie Kamuca on tenor, Victor Feldman doubling on piano and vibes, bassist Ben Tucker and drummer Stan Levey) on six swing-oriented standards and the obscure "Something for Lisa," all given Bill Holman arrangements. Wright had a quiet, appealing tone and a strong bop-based improvising style. Highlights of the disc include "Easy to Love," "Swingin' the Blues" and "Taps Miller." --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
