Joshua Breakstone - Guitar, Producer
Dennis Irwin - Bass
Kenny Barron - Piano
Kenny Washington - Drums

This recording puts into focus a different side of this well-known jazz guitarist. Breakstone performs ten guitar themes from the 60's group, the Ventures, such as "Walk, Don't Run", "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue", "Apache" and "Caravan", all done in his solidly swinging style. He is backed by the incomparable Kenny Barron, with the same excellent results he achieved for Dizzy and Getz.

* Bill Milkowski - Liner Notes
* Edward VanLandeghem - Mastering
* Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer
* Yoichi Nakao - Executive Producer

Although it is not noted anywhere except in the liner notes, this '91 session could be subtitled "tribute to the Ventures." Guitarist Joshua Breakstone covers 10 tunes originally recorded by the surf guitar legends, but does not rip through them or make any concession to a more rock or pop approach. Instead, he takes them as he does any composition, playing in a gentle, relaxed pace, investigating the melody, slowly interpreting and revising via his solos. Breakstone's sound and approach are reminiscent of Jim Hall's, although his voicings are not as full, and his comping and tone are his own. Breakstone and company give Ventures fans and jazz audiences something to ponder with their explorations of these 10 tunes.
---Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

A fine bop-based guitarist, Joshua Breakstone discovered jazz when he was 14. He studied for several years with Sal Salvador, yet at the time was gigging regularly with a rock group. He attended Berklee, and in 1977, toured Canada with the reed player Glen Hall, making his recording debut on Hall's Sonora release. During and after teaching guitar at the Rhode Island Conservatory of Music (1979-1981), Breakstone worked in New York with Warne Marsh, Emily Remler, Dave Schnitter, and Vic Juris. In 1983, he recorded his first album (Wonderful!) for Sonora. While that date had Barry Harris on piano, his follow-up featured Kenny Barron. Breakstone went on to record for Contemporary (including a quartet date featuring Pepper Adams), Capri, Evidence, and Double-Time, helping keep the legacy of quiet bop guitar alive.
