Joshua Breakstone - Guitar, Liner Notes, Producer Al Harewood - Drums Jack McDuff - Organ (Hammond) Keith Copeland - Drums Kenny Barron - Piano Ray Drummond - Bass
Legendary Blue Note artist, Grant Green, established himself as a great jazz guitarist in the early sixties by challenging the standard horns/reeds front-line for soloing space to display his own melodic single-note lines. Years later, noted guitarist Joshua Breakstone pays tribute to his spiritual mentor on a CD full of songs associated with Green (plus Irving Berlin's aptly-titled "Remember"). Breakstone's sidemen are equally appropriate: organist "Brother" Jack McDuff, and drummer Al Harewood backed Green on many of his original recordings. Pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Ray Drummond also guest on two tracks.
* Rudy Van Gelder - Engineer, Mastering * Yoichi Nakao - Executive Producer
Originally recorded for the Japanese King label and reissued as an Evidence CD in 1996, this is a logical tribute album. Guitarist Joshua Breakstone, like the late Grant Green, rarely ever plays chords or accompanies anyone else, sticking to single-note solos. On five pieces (two Green originals plus "Street of Dreams," "Moon River" and Duke Pearson's "Idle Moments"), Breakstone jams with organist Jack McDuff and drummer Al Harewood in a fine soul-jazz trio. The two remaining numbers ("Falling In Love With Love" and Irving Berlin's "Remember") find Breakstone leading a conventional acoustic quartet also including pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Keith Copeland. Overall, the music is predictably swinging and well-played, but no real surprises or revelations occur. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
