With an eloquent tribute to Monk under his belt, Joshua Breakstone turns his attention to another of bop's great pianists, Bud Powell, on his third Double-Time outing. His triomates are bassist Earl Sauls and drummer Keith Copeland. An understated yet incredibly fluid bop stylist, Breakstone displays a thorough mastery of Powell's compositions, from early classics like "Tempus Fugit" and "Un Poco Loco" to later works like "Comin' Up" and "The Scene Changes." Other highlights include a wonderfully laid-back "Celia" (dig the "Merry Little Christmas" quote) and the beautiful ballad "Time Waits," on which Breakstone's custom Carl Barney guitar truly sings. ---David R.
