This set (recorded live over a three-day period at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco in 1978) finds the great tenor Sonny Rollins welcoming trumpeter Donald Byrd to half of the selections; Byrd was beginning his comeback...and is in so-so form. The four-piece rhythm section includes drummer Tony Williams. These versions of "Don't Stop the Carnival" and "Autumn Nocturne" are memorable, but most of the rest of the set, although spirited, is a bit lightweight...if enjoyable. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
