Jazz Post-Bop Hard Bop
Recorded: Apr-Jul 1973, CI Recording, New York, New York
Sonny Rollins (soprano & tenor saxophones); Walter Davis, Jr. (piano, electric piano); Mtume (piano, percussion); Masou (guitar); Bob Cranshaw (bass); David Lee (drums)
Sonny Rollins's second Milestone album, recorded in 1973, is basically a working-group recording, and among its most notable features are the tenor saxophone giant's treatments of two superior ballads closely associated with Billie Holiday. But the instrumentation includes electric bass and guitar; percussionist Mtume (later a producer of contemporary black-music hits) contributes a funk tune; and Rollins begins his experimentation with multiple saxophone overdubs. It is a long first step towards the Rollins style of the Seventies applauded by some, criticized by others, but definitely Sonny's newly-chosen path.
This decent effort from Sonny Rollins finds the classic tenor saxophonist at his best on "Good Morning Heartache" and "God Bless the Child" although some of his own originals seem a touch lightweight. His backup band (which includes keyboardist Walter Davis, Jr., and guitarist Masuo) is supportive but somewhat anonymous. Nothing too essential occurs but the music is generally enjoyable. ---Scott Yanow, allmusic |
