What started as almost an accident has now turned into Wayne Horvitz's longest-lasting ensemble. With six albums together as a unit and a couple more backing other musicians, these players have a feel for each other that borders on telepathic. But as great as their albums are, anyone who has ever seen Zony Mash perform live knows that the band really thrives in a live setting, which is why Live in Seattle is such a valuable addition to the group's catalog. Recorded in May and June of 2001 on the band's home turf in Seattle, this is a great-sounding example of what Zony Mash can do with a little more room to stretch out. Every tune gets an extended treatment over its studio counterpart, and Horvitz and guitarist Tim Young really take advantage. The range of sounds each produces is dazzling, and the playing is fantastic. Everyone knows Horvitz can play, but it's time Tim Young got some real recognition as one of the more able and inventive guitarists out there. The contributions of Andy Roth and Keith Lowe might be easy to overlook with little to no solo time, but they are the perfect rhythm section for this band: always right on, driving the music while Horvitz and Young go for it. Just listen to the transition between the up-tempo "Meet the Zony Mash" and the slinky, mellow groove of "Slide By" for an example of how well the members of this unit operate together. Live in Seattle is a great set from a great band. Highly recommended. --- Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide |
