Long a busy member of the Los Angeles jazz community, guitarist Doug MacDonald has both a quiet sound and a hard swinging straight-ahead style. On Gentle Rain he performs five quartet numbers with pianist Ross Tompkins, a duo with the late pianist (who is heard on one of his final recordings) on "These Foolish Things," two numbers in which pianist Marty Harris is in Tompkins' spot, five pianoless trio numbers and a solo guitar feature on "Gentle Rain." The music is all standards including the one "original," "Cry," which is really a slightly disguised "I Cried for You." MacDonald sounds unhurried even at the faster tempos, and mellow even when the music is at its most heated. He is the epitome of cool jazz guitar throughout this enjoyable set, one of his finest to date.

Born: Sep 10, 1953 in Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Bop, Hard Bop

Doug MacDonald is a fine bop-based guitarist in the tradition of Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, and Joe Pass. He was raised in Honolulu and started on guitar when he was 13, having briefly played trombone before. MacDonald moved to Los Angeles in 1984 after a year in Las Vegas and made a strong impression as a freelancer. In 1990, he relocated to New York. Doug MacDonald has played with top musicians, including Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, Buddy Rich, Hank Jones, Bob Cooper, Bill Holman, Jack Sheldon, and many others, recording with Sheldon, the Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra, and as a leader for Cexton and Resurgent; one of the latter is a nonet album.
