Nominated in 2005 for Best Jazz Album of the Year by the San Diego Music Academy
Jazz
Recorded: 2005
Bradley Leighton - Alto Flute Rob Whitlock - Hammond B-3 Organ Duncan Moore - Drums Bob Boss - Bass Allan Phillips - Producer/Percussion/Keyboard
Bradley revisits his roots on his second solo recording, his alto flute backed by a Hammond B-3 organ trio. Combining the smooth classic Hammond B-3 sound with the deeper, warm and mellow sonority of the alto flute, Bradley and his collaborators sail through a collection of originals and standards freshly arranged by Allan Phillips. It's music with a smooth, warm glow.

"…Unforced whimsy makes this the kind of music that enhances one's listening experience. The album's mellow sound -- alto flute is much more pleasing to the ear than the higher flute sound most people are used to -- combined with the familiar melody lines of Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" and Bobby Womack's "Breezin' " -- gives this collection a wide-reaching appeal." ---Mary Montgomery, San Diego Reader
"In Bradley Leighton’s gifted hands, the panther is anything but pink. The jazz flutist's latest CD includes a variation of the theme from the Pink Panther like you won’t believe." --- Martin Jones Westlin, CITYBEAT
"Bradley Leighton finds the groove of the alto flute and rides it all the way on the waves of sound coming from the Hammond B-3. You can tell these guys like playing jazz!" --- Claudia Russell, KSDS, Jazz 88.3 fm
Flutist Bradley Leighton's Just Doin' Our Thang is reminiscent in ways of Herbie Mann's recordings of the 1960s. Leighton turns a variety of pop and R&B-oriented tunes into soul-jazz, playing a wide repertoire that ranges from "Sunny" to "Summertime," from "Europa" to "Speak Low." The flute and organ combination is a little unusual but works well, with organist Rob Whitlock playing in a style not that far from that of Jimmy Smith. Guitarist Bob Boss is also an asset. Not many surprises occur, but the music is pleasing and is easily recommended to fans of the jazz organ and the funkier side of jazz. --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
