Bradley Leighton - Alto Flute Allan Phillips - Producer/Percussion/Keyboard Scott Kyle - Trombone John Rekevics - Tenor, baritone and alto sax Brad Steinwehe - Trumpet Evan Marks - Guitars Cecil McBee, Jr. - Bass Duncan Moore - Drums Bradley Leighton's third album, Back To The Funk, was released in early 2006. Leighton co-wrote five songs for the collection of R&B, funk, jazz and pop jams, which were produced and arranged by Allan Phillips. Heading to radio first will be "Runaway", a vintage blast from the past with a modern twist that takes flight with an aggressive rhythmic groove, a cinematic chorus, and fierce alto flute and sweltering sax soloing.
In the contemporary jazz world - where guitars and saxes currently reign supreme - flutist Bradley Leighton brings a fresh, new voice to this popular genre of music. Upbeat, funky urban grooves and the soulful, mellow sound of his alto flute combine to make this collection of tunes a refreshing change of pace in a sometimes mundane and perfunctory genre.

Back to the Funk is an intentional throwback to early-'70s funky jazz, the type of music performed by flutist Herbie Mann and a little later by saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr. The R&B-ish grooves are catchy if predictable and the backup band is solid, with flutist Bradley Leighton in the lead nearly all of the time. Nothing unusual happens, but Leighton plays well over the vamps, sounding enthusiastic and reasonably creative within the genre. While eight of the 11 selections are recent originals, this could very easily be an album from 1972. Fans of that era's funky music will want to pick this one up. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
