Kenny Drew (piano)

Philly Joe Jones (drums)

When Kenny Drew recorded this album--his first as a leader--in 1956, assisted by the highly-regarded drummer and bassist of the Miles Davis Quintet, he seemed on the verge of stardom. Instead, he became an outstanding example of the talented jazz artist who has to journey far to find acceptance. He left the United States in the early Sixties, made his home in Denmark, and remained one of the most active jazz pianists in Europe until his death in 1993. Fittingly, the excellence of this record was first recognized in Japan: released there in the early Seventies, it won critical acclaim, became a best seller, and launched an extensive Riverside reissue series.

Kenny Drew, with the assistance of bassist Paul Chambers (whose bowed solos are always welcome) and drummer Philly Joe Jones, explores six standards and two of his originals. Although Drew would have to move to Europe in the early '60s in order to get the recognition he deserved, it is obvious (in hindsight) from this enjoyable date that he was already a major improviser.
