Shortly after releasing my latest CD, " All about Love" which included the cover song "Moonlight in Vermont", I was totally caught off guard when I received an email from the songwriter of this beautiful ballad, Mr. Johnny Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn is 92 years old, and lives along the Oregon coast.
In his words: "It was with great pleasure I recently learned about your recent CD release, "All about Love" and your inclusion of "Moonlight in Vermont". Logging into your web page, I read the wonderful story of your mother and her card parties, and how they enjoyed a good ballad. So do I! Your vocal styling and interpretation are just wonderful. Continued success to you, and thank your for recording "Moonlight in Vermont".
I was so amazed to hear from him that I asked him how he heard about my CD? He told me the story about how the Music Director of KYTE-FM radio in Newport, Oregon, Dusty Baker, had received my CD for review. Johnny Blackburn's son, just happened to be the Program Director at KYTE-FM and hosts a 6-hour block of Jazz and Blues programming each week. When the song " Moonlight" was pointed out to him, he notified his father, and then put it into rotation on his program. "I was thrilled", says Mr. Blackburn.
In our email exchanges, Mr. Blackburn shared his inspiration for writing this song. He had spent some time teaching school in Bennington College in Vermont, and knew a little bit about the lay of the land. When he and co-writer, Karl Suessdorf, decided to write a song, they decided to do a song about a state, figuring that the state would always be there…so would the song." The words came as naturally as breathing," he says.
I was even more honored when he sent me this promotional photo of Margaret Whiting and himself just after the single was released on Capitol Records, in 1954. |
