Jim Galloway's Wee Big Band has been in existence for 30 years, but surprisingly, Blue Reverie is only its third recording. The orchestra (which, despite its name, is a full-size, 17-piece jazz ensemble) is as swing-oriented as its leader. On Blue Reverie, in addition to a few newer arrangements, vintage charts by Jimmy Mundy, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Benny Carter, Buck Clayton, and Chico O'Farrill ("Chicago") have been transcribed from recordings. But rather than re-creations, these live performances sound very much alive, the solos are improvised, and the Jim Galloway Wee Big Band has a musical personality of its own. All but three of the musicians have opportunities to solo, with the standout performances being Gordon Evans' alto on "Isfahan," the swinging ensembles on Benny Carter's "Symphony in Riffs," and the odd, floating Gerry Mulligan arrangement of "If You Were the Only Girl in the World."

Jim Galloway

Active Decades: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jul 28, 1936 in Kilwinning, Scotland
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Dixieland, Swing

An excellent swing soprano player with a lighter tone than Sidney Bechet, Jim Galloway has made many recordings with like-minded veterans. He played locally in Scotland on clarinet and alto before emigrating to Canada in 1965. He soon began specializing on soprano, led the Metro Stompers (1968), put together the Wee Big Band (1978), and hosted the weekly jazz radio program Toronto Alive! (1981-1987). Galloway, who has appeared at many jazz festivals and jazz parties, has recorded for Sackville, Hep, and Music & Arts along with several smaller Canadian labels with such pianists as Dick Wellstood, Art Hodes, and most often with Jay McShann.
