Walter Horton & Johnny Nicholas: Bocce Boogie
Recorded at The Bocce Club (1978). Big Walter Horton - vocals, harp. Musicians: John "Guitar Johnny" Nicholas - vocals, guitar; Sugar Ray Norcia - vocals; Ronnie Earl - guitar; Anthony Giarossi - piano; Mudcat Ward - bass instrument; Ted Harvey - drums.
Informal live recordings from a wedding party in Rhode Island, recorded with 150 people partying in a small club, and Sugar Ray & The Bluetones performing with special guests. The sound quality is not hi-fi, but it's pretty good. Hard to believe the recording was made with only one microphone, on to a reel-to-reel tape recorder. The set starts off with Everyday I Have The Blues featuring Sugar Ray and Ronnie Earl. Then Walter Horton hits the stage, performing nine songs. Johnny Nicholas, obviously related to the wedding couple, takes the lead on four tracks. The CD closes with a cool instrumental shuffle featuring Ronnie Earl. At the time these recordings were made, the blues wasn't popular. But obviously the music was blooming in the background before it boomed, a decade later. This is a great album for all fans of Ronnie Earl, Sugar Ray, and of course: the one-and-only Walter Horton.
