The later version of Lu Watters' Yerba Buena Jazz Band is featured on this enjoyable Dixieland CD. The music is taken from ten live performances at Hambone Kelly's and showcases Watters' octet, which is comprised of the leader's trumpet, clarinetist Bob Helm, trombonist Don Noakes, pianist Wally Rose, Clancy Hayes on banjo and vocals, second banjoist Pat Patton, the tuba of Dick Lammi and drummer Bill Dart. The recording quality is decent, the playing is quite spirited, and even though this group only had one trumpet (as opposed to two in Watters' more famous earlier band), the hard-driving rhythm and spirited ensembles sound very much in the tradition of the Yerba Buena Jazz Band. Recommended. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
