Best Of The Fest!
Lucky for us there were cameras to capture the funky Meters' unforgettable show at the 200 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Widely considered to be the founding fathers of funk, The Meters spent the '60s and '70s perfecting their unique musical blend which incorporates blues and dance grooves with New Orleans vibe. Rechristened the funky Meters' in 1994, the band continued their tradition of fusing their individual styles into a distinct sound that wins new fans with each performance.
New Orleans' Funky Meters are one of the most powerful live acts around, and there's no better place to see them than at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, in front of a mix of in-the-know locals and rabidly enthusiastic out-of-towners. Luckily, camera crews were on hand to capture the Funky Meters' unforgettable show at the 2000 JazzFest, resulting in this amazing DVD. Widely considered to be the founding fathers of funk, The Meters spent the '60 and '70s perfecting their unique musical blend, which incorporates blues and dance grooves with a New Orleans vibe. They've backed Paul McCartney in the studio, toured the world with the Rolling Stones, and been covered by Widespread Panic and The Grateful Dead. Along the way, the band has continued to fuse their individual styles into a distinct sound that wins fans with each performance. And fans new and old will be won over by this performance, available now for the first time on DVD.
Features: Interviews with Art Neville and George Porter, Jr.
Formed in 1967, New Orleans band The Meters are renowned for pioneering a unique sound that blends funk, blues, dance music, and the joyful rhythms of their native Cajun culture. Renamed Funky Meters in 1994, the band has toured with The Rolling Stones; played with Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer; been covered by Widespread Panic and The Grateful Dead; sampled by LL Cool J and Queen Latifah; and lionized by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The highly influential Funky Meters are captured live in this concert recorded at the 2000 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, performing classics such as "Cissy Strut," "People Say," "They All Ask for You," "Look-Ka Py Py," and more.
One of the tightest and most grooving bands ever to come out of New Orleans (and in the Crescent City, that's no small statement), the Funky Meters have been laying down a laid back but potent second-line rhythm since the late '60s, and have long been a favorite of musical aficionados and beat collectors alike. Funky Meters: Live From the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival records a superb set that the band played at the 2000 edition of the annual music festival, which includes the songs "Cissy Strut," "Look-Ka Py Py," "Africa," "Ain't No Use," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and more. ---Mark Deming, All Movie Guide |
