Included is rare footage shot on tour in 1974, coupled with a brand new interview with bassist Glenn Hughes as he tells the fascinating story of the formation of the famous Deep Purple Mark III line up. This exciting new look for Purple featured core Purple veterans Blackmore, Lord and Paice allied to the brilliance of new members Coverdale and Hughes. Purple Mark III burned brilliantly on one of rock's legendary albums before crashing to earth with the lacklustre Stormbringer and the subsequent dissolution of the band in the wake of the departure of Ritchie Blackmore. Essential viewing for Purple fans everywhere.
As the band continues on their mammoth 2 year tour there has never been a better time for a comprehensive retrospective from the boys themselves. From the pick of archives worldwide this film consolidates a career of media outpourings into a double disc set illustrated by highlights of Deep purple at their best!
Stormbringer falls short of the excellence of Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, but nonetheless boasts some definite classics -- including the fiery "Lady Double Dealer," the ominous title song (a goth metal treasure), the sweaty "High Ball Shooter," and the melancholy ballad "Soldier of Fortune." Most of the other songs on the decent, if uneven, Stormbringer (which Metal Blade reissued on CD in the early '90s) are not essential. Like Come Taste the Band, Stormbringer will be of interest to Deep Purple's more enthusiastic fans, rather than casual listeners who would be much better off starting out with either of the above-mentioned studio projects or the live Made in Japan. [Classic Rock Legends issued a DVD edition in 2008.]
