With his new group YOHIMBE BROTHERS, guitarist Vernon Reid (ex-Living Colour) joins forces with his New York buddy DJ Logic to create a fusion sound at the crossroads of funk, rap and Latino rhythms. This film, shot during a Banlieues Bleues 2005 concert, experiments with the image/sound relationship using a VJ technique (in postproduction) that consists of recreating the conditions of live multicam to treat each track with specific graphics, colorization, double exposure, distortions or typographic images.
This music documentary juxtaposes a 2005 live gig by the funk and hip-hop band The Yohimbe Brothers (the new project of former Living Colour Guitarist Vernon Reid and turntablist DJ Logic), with experimental graphics and images.
Vernon Reid's name will always be associated with the risk-taking alternative metal/funk-rock band Living Colour, but the guitarist has done quite a few other things along the way, and one of his most intriguing projects has been the Yohimbe Brothers, which he has co-led with DJ Logic. This live DVD documents a 2005 show that was filmed on the outskirts of Paris, and anyone who has had a hard time categorizing the Yohimbe Brothers' studio recordings won't find that they are any easier to categorize on-stage. Dense, experimental, quirky, and cerebral, Reid and Logic provide a consistently risk-taking blend of rock, hip-hop, funk, avant-garde jazz, drum'n'bass (also known as jungle), reggae, and world music that never fits neatly into any one category. These performances in Paris are all over the place in terms of influences, and that is true on the freewheeling instrumental numbers as well as on the tunes that feature vocalist Latasha Diggs (who has no problem being soulful and eccentric at the same time). No one will mistake this concert for a Living Colour show; the Yohimbe Brothers' funky yet abstract work doesn't sound anything at all like Living Colour, and Reid's versatility speaks well of him. La Huit, the Paris-based company that released this DVD, added a lot of psychedelic visuals in post-production -- visuals that are quite appropriate given the trippy nature of the music. This release is perhaps a bit less essential than the Yohimbe Brothers' studio albums Front End Lifter and The Tao of Yo, but it is still an engaging document of the bold experimentalism that Reid and Logic brought to the City of Lights in 2005.

Naming themselves after the African root used to enhance male sexual performance, longtime collaborators Vernon Reid and DJ Logic united in 2002 as Yohimbe Brothers and released Front End Lifter, a dense album of guitar-fueled turntablism. The two New York-based artists first came together in the early '90s as founding members of the Black Rock Coalition. At the time, Reid led Living Colour, a short-lived yet enormously successful hard rock band driven largely by his guitar playing, and Logic participated in the band Eye & I. Following the demise of both Living Colour and Eye & I, the two artists partook in numerous projects, both mutually and independently, before finally making their partnership official in 2002 as Yohimbe Brothers with the release of Front End Lifter on Ropeadope Records. A month-long cross-country tour followed in October.
