On the night of September 7, 2007, international singer/songwriter Chantal Chamandy, made history by becoming the first person ever to be granted permission to perform a taped concert at the base of The Pyramids on the Giza plateau in Egypt. The night was especially important for the Egyptian-born Chamandy, currently based in Montreal, as she returned to her birthplace to deliver a positive portrayal of middle-eastern culture. Chamandy performed alongside the Cairo Symphony Orchestra, dancers from the Egyptian National Ballet Company and Tanoura dancers in front of a capacity audience of 5,000 people. In addition, acclaimed director Gerard Pullicino (Beyonce, Madonna, Celine Dion), choreographer Genevieve Dorion-Coupal (The Beatles' "Love" by Cirque du Soleil) and set designer Guy St-Amour (also from Cirque du Soleil) added their unique style to this special performance.
It was a beautiful night of firsts. It was the first time international diva Chantal Chamady had returned to Egypt since she was a child. It was also the first time a live concert was filmed at the pyramids for an international audience. Now witness the glorious spectacle as Chamady brings her message of global peace to the world, singing in a variety of languages, from English to Arabic. The pyramids provide the timeless backdrop for this emotional live concert that includes the songs "Salma ya Salma," "Music of the Moon," and "Dis-Moi."

Though she was born in Alexandria, Egypt, to an Egyptian/Greek father and Lebenese mother, Chantal Chamandy spent most of her life in Montreal, Canada, where her family moved when she was a young girl. She was signed to a record label at 16, but things never quite worked out. However, the singer and pianist continued to write her own music and pursue her career, finally finding an ally in Ninemuse Records, which released her debut album, Love Needs You, which featured lyrics in English, French, Arabic, and Spanish, in 2005. After the success of the single "You Want Me," which was remixed by various DJs, Love Needs You came out in the U.S. in 2006. --- Marisa Brown, All Music Guide |
