Tenor saxophonist Frank Foster deserves credit for exploring advanced jazz during his 22 years (1965-87) between stints with the Count Basie Orchestra, rather than just playing in swing revival groups. In the 1970s, he often headed a big band called "The Loud Minority." For this Mainstream recording (reissued on CD), Foster is actually at the head of a smaller unit, a 15-piece band with six horns, a guitarist, two keyboardists (Harold Mabern and Jan Hammer), two bassists (Stanley Clarke and Gene Perla), three drummers (including Elvin Jones) and percussionist Airto. The music, although moderately intriguing, is quite dated. Dee Dee Bridgewater speaks and shouts out some protest lyrics on the title cut. She also sings wordlessly a bit on "E.W.-Beautiful People"; Foster takes an unfortunate, out-of-tune soprano solo on the latter. The overcrowded ensembles on the four lengthy numbers have their appeal, and there are scattered solos for Hammer, guitarist Earl Dunbar and trumpeter Marvin Peterson, among others. But overall, this is a lesser effort. ---cott Yanow, All Music Guide |
