This CD reissue has the six selections originally put out by the Canadian Dark Orchid label and adds three additional numbers from the same sessions. One of the few early Boss Brass albums currently available on CD, this set features McConnell's big band in typically swinging form. To name a few highlights, "T.O." goes through many styles, from hints of Dixieland to free; trombonist Ian McDougall is featured on Jobim's "Ana Luisa"; altoist Moe Koffman and trumpeter Sam Noto are heard from on "Groovin' High," and the band gets surprisingly funky on "Squib Cakes." A fine all-around showcase for the jazz orchestra. --- Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
