Rob McConnell is best known as the leader of Canada's world-famous big band, the 21-piece Boss Brass. He is also one of a select handful of valve trombone masters. His innovative arrangements of standards and superb original compositions are noted for their melodic content and highly charged, swinging sections. McConnell has received international acclaim and numerous awards over a long and distinguished career, including three Grammy Awards (and many nominations) and seven Juno Awards. His self-titled Justin Time debut The Rob McConnell Tentet (released in 2000) won a Juno and was nominated for a Grammy. Mr McConnell was inducted into the Juno Jazz Hall of Fame in 1997, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of Canada's highest honours. The Rob McConnell Tentet started with about 15 charts for a single club date in Toronto at the end of 1997. Six years later, the band are ready to unveil their third superb recording: this time, the theme is the music of the 1920's, the true 'jazz age' with hundreds of great tunes to choose from. Compositions by, among others, Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin and Cole Porter are marvellously arranged by Rob McConnell and Rick Wilkins (Berlin's ‘Remember'), another master of jazz arranging, who also co-produced this superb recording. The Tentet's members, each one a headliner independent of this outfit, obviously enjoy sharing the limelight, as the listener will hear. Each solo and ensemble passage is imbued with the RMT's joy of music and their amazing camaraderie. If you get a chance to hear the group live, go - they are a riot!

Although the 11 songs on this CD (with the exception of a very brief tribute to Miles Davis on "Summertime," which is the second half of a medley) were written in the 1920s, the arrangements are very much in the style of Rob McConnell, who wrote all but one chart. The music is conservative yet swinging and unpredictable. "Lover Come Back to Me" is particularly eccentric with its many tempo and mood changes, but in reality none of these performances are run-of-the-mill or overly safe. Rob McConnell drew the group's personnel from his Boss Brass and each of the musicians has his chance to shine. In fact, all ten musicians get a spot on "Thou Swell" in addition to other features. Since the tentet consists of some of the finest jazz players in Canada and the arrangements are inspiring, this is a highly recommended straight-ahead jazz set.
