The valve trombonist Rob McConnell, best known as the leader/arranger of the Boss Brass, an organization founded by Rob in 1969 that has featured many of Canada's best musicians on numerous tours and on many recordings, presents his Tentet for his first recording on the Justin Time label.

Liner Notes

Hello friends,

On this, the Tentet's debut recording and my first for Justin Time, they've allowed me to continue the (almost) tradition of writing some notes for you. The Tentet started with about 15 charts for a single club date at the end of 1997 in Toronto. We've continued with the pleasure of working a couple of weeks a year for Sybil Walker at The Top O' The Senator, plus some festivals, one mini-tour of Vancouver and environs last February, a couple of dances, a bar mitzvah, 3 parades, a demonstration and now, this CD. After 32 years with the Boss Brass (a very good run), I'm now having loads of fun writing and playing with this band. With my old friends Terry Clarke (drums), Steve Wallace (bass), P.J. Perry (alto saxophone), "caro" Guido and the young guys booting us along, the "having fun in music" quotient has gone way up!

Sometime before starting the Tentet, I was thinking about how I started as a musician and what my hopes and dreams were etc. (this happens more frequently as you get older). The answer was to have a band like this: mostly American Songbook tunes, some jazz standards and the odd original piece. I still love to play (when I'm playing well) and with the LARGE band I didn't play enough (no room). Of course when I started I would have played LEAD trombone in my own band. In this band I play last trombone but that isn't bad as there are only two, next year I'll be playing 3rd bone and there will still be two. Anyway, you get the picture. More fun, more playing, very swift company and half the phone calls (AND PAYROLL!).

THE MUSIC:

1. Old Devil Moon: It was an easy decision starting with this. The playing instructions are: "IMMEDIATELY THROBBING." Alex Dean is always a big help in this regard.

2. Speak Low: An orchestration of George Shearing's arrangement. My friend and George's bassist, Neil Swainson, wrote out their chart for me.

3. Two Bass Hit: (likely something to do with baseball): This chart (?) has evolved (especially since P.J. Perry joined us) into our major saxophone feature (wanker).

4. Everything I Love: The inspiration for this one is from a Paul Desmond record of 1975, "Pure Desmond." My old friend Ed Bickert played guitar along with Ron Carter on bass and Connie Kay on drums. It is one of a few recordings that I would take to the proverbial "desert island." In one of the reviews of this record the writer praised Ed's playing grandly and even complimented the "other" guitarist who accompanies him. Of course there isn't one. The second and third chorus of this arrangement are my take on Ed and that elusive other guy.

5. Con Alma: One of the great mileposts of jazz composition by Dizzy Gillespie. This piece has also evolved over time into a feature for Steve McDade. Any trumpet players listening to this track will sympathize with Steve playing the whole thing with the dreaded harmon mute. Dizzy and Harry "Sweets" Edison were the pioneers of this mute.

6. Maybe September: A wonderful ballad by Percy Faith who in the ~30's played violin at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. This piece was the main theme for arguably one of the worst movies of all time, "The Oscar," the 1966 version with Milton Berle, Ernest Borgnine and Tony Bennett (?!).

7. Theme For Jobim: I think this lovely Gerry Mulligan tune captures the real flavour of Antonio Carlos Jobim's music. I have tried to compliment both of them with this arrangement.

8. Ian Leaps Out: The only original piece on this recording, composed and arranged by my compadre Ian McDougall (you might notice another McDougall credit on this CD. Jo McDougall, our photographer, is Ian's daughter). On Ian's CD, "Dry With a Twist" (I wonder what that's about?), his sextet plays this song, appropriately enough, at the tempo of "Lester Leaps In." Somehow over the past year it has caught some sort of "speed" virus. Sorry Ian, the coffee is quite a bit stronger in Toronto than Victoria B.C. (so is the gin!)

9. Manha de Carnaval: Our treatment of this Luiz Bonfa composition is a trifle more involved than most: An a capella piano solo, the tag as the intro and the ending, medium groove "4" for the blowing and slow bossa near the end. Some of these ideas are courtesy of a wonderful Jimmy Rowles, Ray Brown record originally titled "Brown, Rowles " with a brown Rolls Royce on the cover.

10. Lush Life: The wonderful music (AND lyrics) of Billy Strayhorn, written when he was 19 years old in 1934 (Phew!). Who better to play this than Guido Basso. One of our inspirations for this would certainly be Conte Condoli with Bill Holman's band in the 50's.

11. These Are The Things I Love: A peaceful way to end this recording, I think. The sentiment of the title correctly expresses my feelings about this CD and the wonderful musicians/friends that are in this new band.

May we keep going,

Rob McConnell
