"The Departing Hunter's Song", "War Dance Song" arrang. by H. Roberts

Hank Roberts, born in the mid-fifties in Terre Haute, Indiana, begins his musical career in the mid-West, but his path soon leads to the East Coast, where - at the start of the eighties - he, along with Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, Mark Feldman, Joey Baron and other young musicians like John Zorn, gives new life to the Downtown New York scene, and is portrayed by many music journalists as an alternative to the so-called M-Base-Group around Steve Coleman, Greg Osby and Cassandra Wilson. The idea of so-called Downtown Music prob-ably arises from Yoko Ono's Loft, which she opens in the early sixties, and where, among others, many "Fluxus" artists show up and present their works. At the start of the seventies, the scene changed: "The Kitchen" opens up, and becomes a venue for Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, John Moran, Peter Greenaway, Brian Eno, Cindy Sherman and others. In 1987 the whole young Downtown music scene, which Hank Roberts is part of, finds a new home at the "Knitting Factory". The German label JMT, founded in 1985, is one of the few to document the early work of both M-Base and the Downtown Music scene. Hank Roberts' debut album »Black Pastels«, with Bill Frisell, Tim Berne, Joey Baron and other comes out in 1988, and other JMT albums follow. Hanks Roberts, the most important cellist in the Downtown Music scene, now tours extensively in Europe, pops up in Japan, and forms the string trio "Arcado" with Mark Feldman and Mark Dresser, as well as the group "Miniature" with Tim Berne and Joey Baron. At the peak of his career, Hank Roberts leaves New York, burning some bridges behind him, since for him the most important thing is his family, and he doesn't want the unstable, unpredictable life of a musician to put it at risk. He retreats to the calm of Ithaca, to devote himself to his children. Roberts turns down offers of tours, and rarely goes into the studio, yet he doesn't lose contact with music. Once his children are able, increasingly, to go their own way, Hank Roberts' inclination to get back into the music scene gets ever stronger. In 2006 cellist Hank Roberts, French guitarist Marc Ducret and American drummer Jim Black come together to make their first European tour. The audience is excited by their free improvisation and experimental music, and from this beginning, the new Hank Roberts Trio develops the programme »Green«. In 2007 the three musicians meet up for a week at an old warehouse just outside Munich that has been newly set up as a recording studio, to make their debut album for Winter & Winter. Alongside the excellent guitarist Marc Ducret and the sensitive drummer Jim Black, Roberts creates new sonic worlds, with stories to tell about American folk music and Indian dancing, as well as jazz and rock 'n' roll. Roberts, Ducret and Black play free improvisations, sound- and rhythm-compositions, and create a special sonic world of their own. There are new songs like "In the 60s", "Cola People" and "Trees", and "The Departing Song / War Dance / Jersey Devil" is newly adapted for this group. Robert sings during the fade-out of the recording of "Pictures", a homage to his mother. »Green« is a work created by three individual musicians who have a particular musical understanding and empathy with one another, and have realised this at the highest artistic level.

All too often, artists who run around telling you they are "beyond category" or hard to categorize are, in fact, very easy to categorize; it's a matter of the artists having delusions of grandeur and not being nearly as unique, creative or experimental as they like to think they are. But there are some artists who really are difficult to categorize, and Hank Roberts is one of them. The New York City-based cellist/guitarist (originally from Indiana) has been influenced by a variety of musical styles, and Green doesn't confine itself to one particular category exclusively. But if Green has a dominant ingredient, it is avant-garde jazz; essentially, Roberts is an avant-garde jazz musician, although Euro-classical, folk, blues, soul and world music are also important parts of the picture on this 2007 recording (which finds him forming a trio with electric and acoustic guitarist Marc Ducret and drummer Jim Black). Roberts, who turned 53 in 2008, doesn't come across as someone who listens to one type of music exclusively, but he does come across as someone who really appreciates the more reflective side of avant-garde jazz--and that is exactly the type of avant-garde jazz that is heard on Green. This isn't angry, dense, harsh, abrasive or claustrophobic music; Roberts values space, and the listener is given a lot of breathing room. When Roberts provides the occasional vocal and goes into "singing instrumentalist" mode, his appreciation of blues and folk becomes especially apparent. But even at his most rootsy, Roberts maintains his eccentricity and his left-of-center perspective, which is a perspective that yields generally noteworthy results on Green.

Hank Roberts

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Mar 24, 1954 in Indiana
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Modern Creative, Fusion, Avant-Garde Jazz

Cellist Hank Roberts is one of the most accomplished jazz improvisers on his instrument, working mostly in the avant-garde and modern creative fields. Roberts was born March 24, 1955, in Terre Haute, IN, and began studying classical cello at age ten; he also experimented with trombone, guitar, and piano in high school. At 19, Roberts attended the Berklee School of Music, where he began to develop an improvisational style that incorporated jazz, blues, folk, and classical music, and often featured double-stops and chord voicings. Roberts didn't enter music professionally until the '80s, when he moved to New York, eventually settling in Ithaca; he made an immediate impression on the downtown N.Y.C. scene, and quickly began playing with Bill Frisell and Tim Berne. Both appeared on his 1987 debut as a leader, Black Pastels (on JMT). In 1989, Roberts joined two different ensembles: Miniature, a freewheeling trio featuring Berne and drummer Joey Baron; and Arcado, a string trio also including violinist Mark Feldman and bassist Mark Dresser. Both released eponymous debuts that year; Miniature recorded three albums before disbanding in 1991, and Arcado issued its sophomore swan song in 1992. Meanwhile, Roberts recorded his second effort as a leader, Birds of Prey, in 1990, and the next year formed his own trio with bassist Peter Chwazik and drummer Bill King. In the middle of the decade, he became a teacher in order to spend more time with his family. However, he returned in 1997 with two sessions: the entirely solo, cello-and-vocal improvisations of 22 Years From Now (recorded in a monastery); and I'll Always Remember, the first CD to feature Roberts' longtime trio. In 1999, Roberts recorded a duo album with Tim Berne called Cause and Reflect, and the following year he performed with the new acoustic string trio Ti Ti Chickapea on their debut A Change of Worlds.
