A new CD inspired by a legendary session! Saxophonists Dave Liebman, Don Braden, and Dan Moretti are featured here in a Latin session that has its roots in Elvin Jones' 1972 album "Genesis". This group generates raw, grooving, high-energy Latin-jazz.

Latin Genesis is a summit meeting of three top-notch saxophonists: Dave Liebman, Don Braden, and Dan Moretti. Together, they put a Latin spin on material from Elvin Jones' 1971 album Genesis (which also featured three front-line saxes and was Liebman's first record date with the great drummer). Electric bassist Oscar Stagnaro and drummer Mark Walker provide rhythmic backing, along with guest percussionists Pernell Saturnino, Jorge Najarro, and Rick Andrade. The four cuts from Genesis are Frank Foster's "Cecilia Is Love," Elvin Jones' "Three Card Molly," and Gene Perla's "P.P. Phoenix" and "For All the Other Times." Liebman's swinging "Brite Piece" is thrown in for good measure, as are stormy covers of Rodgers & Hart's "Have You Met Miss Jones" and Lee Morgan's "Calling Miss Khadija." Moretti contributes the mellow flute vehicle "Tiara" and the bass clarinet-colored "Trippin'," while Braden weighs in with the opening "Vail Jumpers." The interplay between these three heavy-hitters is intense, and thankfully, their solos are carefully distinguished on the track listing for the listener's benefit. A timely update on Elvin Jones' '70s post-bop aesthetic. (Jones' Genesis, by the way, was reissued as a part of an eight-disc box from Mosaic.)

Dave Liebman has developed through time to become one of the top soprano saxophonists in jazz. A highly individual and explorative (yet versatile) improviser who can stretch from bop to free, Liebman studied early on with Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. He gained important experience playing with Ten Wheel Drive (1970), Elvin Jones (1971-1973), and Miles Davis' fusion group (1973-1974). Liebman formed Lookout Farm in 1974, the first of several groups (including Quest in the 1980s) that teamed his reeds with pianist Richie Beirach. By the late '80s, he had largely dropped the tenor to concentrate on soprano and occasionally flute, although he made a rare recording on tenor for Double-Time in 1995. Dave Liebman, who is very active in jazz education and has written several books, has recorded for a countless number of labels through the years as a leader, including PM, ECM, Horizon, Timeless, Palo Alto, Impulse, Soul Note, Heads Up, Storyville, Owl, CMP, Red, and Candid.
