VARIATIONS is the latest recording from trio MISINTERPROTATO. Recorded in two sessions at the ABC studios in Melbourne with master engineer Mal Stanley, VARIATIONS is a collection of high energy works with varied melodic and rhythmic landscapes, the finest recording yet by the trio.
Driven by pianist Sean Foran, teamed with John Parker's expansive timbral range on percussion and Patrick Marchisella's visceral touch on the double bass, this third release from the trio finds a confident group of musicians who are truly flourishing.
The relaxed structure of Foran and Parker's intimate song writing combined with the group's spontaneous musicality creates some very special moments on this captivating album. Vastly dynamic the trio stretches from subtle ballads 1please' and 'ascent' to dense ferocious tracks 'chunk', 'the unknown' and 'Variations on a bad day'.
The recording comes after a stunning period for the trio, with two critically acclaime albums already out - "now for the Free" and "In is In", tours to Japan, Canada and, in 2006, embarking on a 4 concert series "adaptations" with guests at the Judith Wright Centre. The Adaptations experience led the trio to include special guest artists on VARIATIONS.
Expect a sound that captures elements of European jazz, avant-garde rock, and minimalist music explored through the excitement of improvisation.

Misinterprotato are one of Australia's most inventive contemporary music ensembles.
Much loved by the intensely creative Brisbane music scene they are so much more than a traditional jazz trio. The group expands the capacities of the classic piano/bass/drums combination with elements of the avant-garde and a fresh attitude they bring to their music. Their new album Variations encapsulates the vision, virtuosity and passion to discover new ground which sets this group apart, and is their finest yet.
Formed while studying at the Queensland Conservatorium, the group's sound is driven by pianist Sean Foran, teamed with John Parker's expansive dynamic and timbral range on percussion and Patrick Marchisella's visceral touch on the double bass.
In a rhythm section far beyond just an accompaniment, Marchisella's bass playing exudes emotion sweetly and succinctly, and Parker's drumming is so effective as to be interpreted as counter-melodies and harmony to Foran's beautiful flow on the keys.
With two acclaimed albums released, "now for the free" and "In is In" the trio gathered acclaim around Australia, performing at the Wangaratta Jazz festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Melbourne International jazz Festival among others. The trio have also appeared at the Calgary International Jazz Festival Canada and Kutchan Jazz Festival Japan.
