The big band era may be over 60 years in the past as of this writing and economics make it impossible for all but a few ghost bands to regularly travel, but the music lives on virtually everywhere. It may not be 1940s swing but it certainly swings, particularly in the case of the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra. Based in Kentucky, this 21-piece group has superior musicianship with each of the five trumpeters taking turns playing lead; all can hit high notes with apparent ease. While the co-leaders trumpeter Vince DiMartino and Miles Osland (heard on soprano, alto and flute) are the key soloists, there are also spots for tenors Gordon Towell and David Anderson, trombonists Brad Kerns, Jim Grubbs and David Henderson, trumpeter Rick Cook and pianist Raleigh Dailey. In addition, Angie Ortega takes vocals on Bob Mintzer's "TV Blues" and "I've Got A Crush On You." Many different arrangers are represented including Bill Holman ("Begin The Beguine"), Tom Kubis ("Speak Low"), Frank Mantooth ("Mean To Me") and the band's pianist Raleigh Dailey. The majority of the selections are standards (though there are some obscurities) but even the best known selections have inventive charts that make the music swinging and jumping. Fans of modern swinging big bands will definitely enjoy this excellent effort, and they should thank the Sea Breeze label for documenting so many excellent jazz orchestras during the past 20 years. ---Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
