Phillip Johnston has been compared to H.G. Wells, Steve Reich, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Vince Guaraldi, Captain Beefheart, Raymond Scott and Steve Lacy. He has written music for films by Paul Mazursky (Faithful) and Philip Haas (Music of Chance, Money Man) among others and he has led the groups The Microscopic Septet, Big Trouble, and the Transparent Quartet. Currently he is the co-leader (with guitarist Gary Lucas) of Fast 'N' Bulbous: The Captain Beefheart Project, and is touring his most recent silent film score, for F.W. Murnau's Faust, with master accordionist Guy Klucevsek.

Make no mistake about it, Phillip Johnston is a genius. He is truly one of the greats of 21st century jazz Sax. No foolin'. This is his 10th release, his first for Innova. And it's a real gem. Rub Me the Wrong Way is a remarkable record: Avant Garde, but lush, melodic and dare we say it; romantic. Its hard to put into one genre. Oh it's Jazz all right but it also embraces Ragtime, Blues, African music, French Hurdy Gurdy music, film soundtracks and a host of other styles.

It's truly hard to explain what this music sounds like: it's timeless, yet completely of the now, like a vintage tie with a funky new suit. Sincerity, not just showmanship. It might sound like hype but it's not, this is a truly terrific listen.

Phillip Johnston's unique approach to jazz mixes nostalgic-sounding music with forward-thinking approaches and his ever-present humor, as on his earlier CDs as a leader and compositions when he was a part of the Microscopic Septet. This CD features three separate works written for Keely Garfield's modern dance company, which is appropriately called Sinister Slapstick. "Minor Repairs Necessary" is made up of 11 separate dances, all featuring Johnston's inventive soprano sax with vibraphonist Mark Josefberg, bassist Lindsey Horner, and pianist Jonathan Dryden (Nurit Tilles subs on one track). "Whodunnit," the quirky opener, features Johnston alternating with each of his sidemen in a playful manner. "Jitter Duel" at first suggests the influence of Ella Fitzgerald's old hit "Hernando's Hideaway" in a duet for bass and vibes, then Johnston's mournful yet hilarious soprano sax takes center stage. Dryden suggests early ragtime piano in "Crash," while "Cliffs" suggests a bizarre march, first serious and then comical. "Rub Me the Wrong Way," the centerpiece of this release, is an extended single movement work that substitutes Will Holshouser's accordion for the piano and drummer Barbara Merjan takes the place of the vibes. This many-faceted work exhibits the influence of klezmer music and some tight unison playing. Johnston switches to tenor sax for the last piece, "The Further Adventures of Slap & Tickle," with Josefberg returning on vibes and pianist Joe Ruddick and bassist David Hofstra also on hand. This work easily eclipses earlier attempts by better-known artists to write and perform jazz-oriented dance music. It's a shame that there isn't at least one video clip of the dancers performing to this fascinating music, but that might have excessively increased production costs for this delightful CD by Phillip Johnston.

Phillip Johnston

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jan 22, 1955 in Chicago, IL
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Modern Creative, Progressive Big Band, Post-Bop, Soundtracks, Film Music, Avant-Garde Jazz

The twisted avant-jazz of Phillip Johnston first reared its head during the early '80s, when the composer and saxophonist was a staple of the downtown New York City underground music scene. There, he performed with a variety of artists both in and out of the jazz community, among them John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, Elliott Sharp, Wayne Horvitz, Butch Morris, and the dB's. He is a founding member of the Microscopic Septet and, after its demise, went on to lead Phillip Johnston's Big Trouble and Phillip Johnston's Transparent Quartet.
In addition to commissioned works in conjunction with a number of theatrical and dance productions, Johnston earned notoriety for his eclectic film work, scoring pictures by directors including Doris Dorrie, Philip Haas, and Paul Mazursky. Following the 1992 breakup of his group the Microscopic Septet, he soon resurfaced fronting the band Big Trouble, debuting with a self-titled LP on the Black Saint label. After scoring the film noir The Unknown, Johnston and Big Trouble returned in 1996 with Flood at the Ant Farm; Normalology followed a year later.
In 1998, Johnston enjoyed a release on Zorn's Tzadik label, Music for Films, and a release on Koch with his newly formed Transparent Quartet, The Needless Kiss. The group finds Johnston with tuba player and bassist Dave Hofstra, pianist/baritone saxophonist Joe Ruddick, and vibraphonist Mark Josefberg. The band followed up their debut with The Merry Frolics of Satan: The Georges Meiles Project in 1999.
